Consumer Reports (CR) listed the 2022 Toyota Prius and Toyota Prius Prime as two of its most reliable new cars that won't sink your budget.
The list details seven cars and SUVs priced under $30,000 (which counts as "affordable" in a time when sub-$20,000 vehicles are virtually non-existent) with exceptional reliability for their price range. The list also includes the Chevy TrailBlazer, the Mazda Miata and Subaru Crosstrek, among others.
It also boasts responsive handling and a comfortable ride, though the gas engine can be a little loud when battery range is depleted. It also comes standard with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, as well as lane-keeping assistance, while blind spot warning comes standard on all but the lowest trim level.
The Prius gets great gas mileage as well, making 43 mpg on city streets and 59 mpg on highways. CR recommends buyers opt for the all-wheel drive XLE trim.
The Toyota Prius Prime takes efficiency to the next level
The 2022 Toyota Prius Prime also made the list. Starting at $28,670, this plug-in hybrid model of the Prius gets 69 mpg overall with 56 mpg in the city and 81 mpg on highways. CR also gave it a 79 out of 100 and a predicted reliability rating of 5 out of 5, calling it perfect for short commutes with its electric-only range of 23 miles. After that, it works pretty much like the regular hybrid Prius in alternating between gas and electric power.
The difference is that drivers can plug this Prius in at home or in public wherever charging is available —so long as they have two hours to spare to let it charge on a 240-volt connector, or five hours on a 120-volt plug.
