How long should I keep my car insurance bills?

I have been really into that Marie Kondo show, and I’m trying to get rid of as much clutter in my house as possible. However, I don't want to toss my car insurance bills if I might need them later. How long should I keep my car insurance bills?

If you use your carfor business, you will need to save your insurance bills for tax purposes and for potential future audits. If you get audited, you may be asked to provide your car insurance bills from the lastseven years. But with that being said, you don’t necessarily need to keep physical copiesif your billing statements will always be available online.
If you don’t use your car for business purposes, the billing statements are more for your own records, so you can decide how long you want to keep them.
Again, if your bills are available online, you can feel more comfortable scrapping the physical copies. And if you ever accidentally throw away a document you think you need, you can always:
  • Look online to see if there is a digital copy in your account
  • Contact your insurance provider to see if you can get a replacement
