What are the pros and cons of the 2022 Rivian R1T?

Pro: Utility that’s tough to match

A major pro in any trim of the Rivian R1T is the amount of features and utility it provides its owners and their passengers.
Not only is the R1T a luxury EV pickup, it has been built to also provide you everything you need while exploring the outdoors safely and comfortably. Here are just a few of the features you can expect to see:
  • 62 cubic feet of storage between the bed, front trunk, rear storage bin, under-seat compartments, center console and gear tunnel.
  • 14.5 inches of adjustable ride height .
  • Four 120V and three 12V outlets onboard
  • Built-in air compressor and lockable tonneau cover (available powered or manual)
  • Tailgate with a gooseneck hinge system that can extend the bed floor to 83.9 inches with the gate down
  • Removable Bluetooth speaker in the center console

Pro: Tons of available accessories to match a number of trips

Whether its mountain biking, camping, or tailgating, the Rivian R1T has a lot of features built-in. Furthermore, it has worked with a number of name-brand manufacturers to offer additional add-ons to make your EV even better.
Add a removable camp kitchen to your gear tunnel that includes a two-burner induction cooktop, a 4-gallon water tank, pump, collapsible sink and spray faucet. Not to mention a drawer to securely store a full cookware set from Snow Peak.
For camping, Rivian has partnered with Yakima to provide 3-person roof tents so you can sleep on top of your truck, all thanks to Rivian’s Cargo Cross Bars which have been designed to fit multiple ports on the roof and are compatible with a broad range of mounts and gear.

Con: Limited availability, especially for higher range

Due to this high demand, global supply chain constraints, and a relatively slow ramp-up of production in Normal, IL, the Rivian R1T has a pretty long waitlist, especially if you haven’t already put in a reservation for one.
For example, R1T reservations made today are not expected to begin deliveries
until late 2023
.

How much does a Rivian R1T electric pickup cost?

The lowest-priced version of the Adventure trim currently starts at an MSRP of $73,000.
According to
Electrek
, Rivian R1T currently qualifies for the full $7,500 federal tax credit . It’s important to note however, that under the terms of the proposed Inflation Reduction Act, some versions of Rivian’s current EVs would no longer qualify because they surpass the $80,000 threshold for electric trucks and SUVs.

Breaking down the range estimates and performance specs of Rivian’s flagship EV

To date, Rivian has been shipping out R1T trucks with the standard and large battery packs, but there is a third option on the way as well. Battery sizes vary from 105 kWh, to 135 kWh, and up to 185 kWh for the Max Pack.

What is the better version of the Rivian R1T?

Normally, we look at all the available trims for an EV, assess what each offers in terms of performance and additional features, and recommend the most bang for your buck. With the R1T however, we have to bow out due to its extensive customization potential and how easily its prices can vary.
For instance, the Adventure trim of the Rivian R1T starts at $73,000 which can already be pretty steep, but if you add quad-motors and the Large battery pack, you’re already paying an extra $14,000.
这是不包括additional customizations available such as wheels (design and size), exterior, or interior color(s). The modularity of the Rivian R1T is what makes it a truly unique and impressive EV.
However, that same modularity makes it difficult to recommend a specific configuration because there are hundreds of possibilities to choose from depending on what you want.
While we don’t recommend a specific layout of the Rivian R1T, we do believe that even in its most standard stock form, it’s easily one of the best EV pickups on the market today, if not the best.

What makes this electric truck unique?

We touched upon this earlier, but in addition to the modular customization and use of every square inch of the Rivian R1T, it’s the additional features and add-ons that make it truly unique in the nascent pickup segment.
For example, the R1Tcomes with a proprietary steel core gear cable that you can loop through your belongings and lock into the bed of the truck . The cable can then be easily locked and unlocked with the vehicle itself. As an add on, you can buy an extended cable for an extra six feet of slack to secure larger items.
When you explore the cabin of the Rivian R1T, you’ll notice astute attention to detail and little features here and there that make it an awesome ride. Another example is the flashlight stowed in the driver’s side door , powered by a single battery cell that matches that of the EV’s battery pack.
The pickup also features eight different drive modes allowing drivers to adjust ride height, suspension, pedal response, all-wheel drive, and more.

How the Rivian R1T compares to its rivals

As we previously mentioned, the R1T kicked off the revolution of all electric pickups, but has since been joined by a number of current and developing competitors. In the US especially, the
Ford F-150 Lightning
and GMC Hummer EV Pickup are already on the market.
As a luxury EV pickup, the R1T’s starting MSRP of around $70,000 is more expensive than the second-most premium Lariat trim of the Ford F-150 Lightning which is currently priced at $67,474. The top-tier Premium trim of the Lightning starts at an MSRP of $90,874, but it’s not difficult to surpass that with the R1T if you add many of the performance features outlined above.
The GMC Hummer EV is slowly but surely rolling out in pickup form, and starts at a higher MSRP than the R1T. The sold-out Edition 1 Hummer EV started at an MSRP over $110,000 and will be followed by the EV³ˣ in fall of 2022 for $104,650. Even the lowest priced version of the GMC Hummer EV pickup is $84,650 and isn’t expected to arrive until spring of 2024.
Looking ahead, there are plenty more electric pickups in the works, including an electrified version of the Chevy Silverado, the Endurance pickup from Lordstown Motors, and the Tesla Cybertruck.

The Rivian R1T changed the electric truck game and could be worth the wait

We are on the mere precipice of seeing widespread all-electric pickups on roads everywhere, and it all began with the Rivian R1T.
As a young automaker, the company continues to wobble as it works to reach scaled production among global supply chain constraints and the growing pains of streamlining production processes.
As a result, the Rivian R1T has a demand far beyond the number of EVs being produced, making it a difficult truck to get your hands on in the short term. If you decide you are all-in and need one of these pickups, it’s best to build your own and get on the waitlist now, because you’re probably going to be waiting over a year for it to arrive.
Still, the appetite for Rivian’s R1T remains, and the automaker continues to push forward with its second model, the R1S SUV. No matter what electric truck option you inevitably choose, insurance to protect it is just as important.
